Nagatoro’s Autunm Leaves

A tourism hot spot just two hours from Tokyo,
where you can enjoy rich nature and spectacular fall foliage!
Every year from November 1st to November 30th, the Fall Foliage Festival takes place in Nagatoro Town, Saitama Prefecture.
Located within two hours of central Tokyo, Nagatoro boasts a vast array of breathtaking mountains and sparkling rivers for visitors to enjoy as soon as they step off the train. In addition to white water river rafting―a must for visitors to the town―the Hodosan Ropeway operating hours are extended during the festival period to provide guests with the opportunity to enjoy both day and night-time scenery, and specific areas are lit up in the evening for a full-day fall foliage experience.

This article aims to provide a short introduction to several activities and events to help visitors get the most out of their visit to Nagatoro.

■ Nagatoro River Boating
While gliding peacefully down the Nagatoro River in traditional, wooden Japanese boats, visitors are treated to a feast of visual splendors in this beloved river rafting activity with a history that spans over 100 years.
The leisurely boat ride takes approximately 20 minutes, during which participants can take their time to fully enjoy the beautiful fall foliage spread out along the banks of both sides of the river. In the afternoon, the spectacle of gorgeous fall foliage reflected on the river’s surface provides a totally different way to enjoy the stunning scenery. The picturesque, calm sections of the river are complemented perfectly by the contrasting river rapids, which offer fast-paced thrills as the boatmen skillfully navigate between the rocks.
